I have found that the Fossil ID sheets I have come across do not reflect what I am commonly finding here in southeast Minnesota. So, I have attempted to create one that you can take in the field and get a general idea of what you may have found. Most of the line art I found via image searches on Google. Some I just couldn’t find line art for and have created a drawing. That said, I am going to put pictures below for a better ID. Also, go to “What’s This?!” for many pictures of certain things, like cephalopods, receptaculitids, etc. I am slowly filling these in, but it does tend to be confusing for me. Trilobites are very difficult for me and that is why I refer people to Midwestpaleo.com on the sidebar as Caleb specializes in trilobites of this area.
“sp.” means species.
And you should be able to click on the above link and have it as a PDF document.
It comes out nice and big so that you can see the pictures in detail.
This ID sheet was requested by several people on the Winona County Hunt.
My hope is that it will help you fossil hunting in this area. It would have sure helped me!
Please comment and let me know what you think, changes, ideas, what you are finding!
Think “skipping stones” for Liospiras.
The one in the middle towards the top.
