Bob went motorcycling for the weekend, so that left me alone for the 4th of July again. I heard the whispers in my dreams, or was it just good memories of last year’s 4th of July hunt?
This year I slept in and took off about mid-morning. I came home exhausted but happy by 1 pm.
I was thrilled! Seven complete Maclurites plus a Maclurites Crassus (about 50:1) and a geodized partial cephalopod!
I was so tired I took a nap.
I had this nagging in the back of my mind, “You should just go and see if you can find Waldo’s (http://www.bluffcountryfossils.net/blog/4th-of-july-fossil-hunt-whahoo-check-out-this-roller/) mate…”, so heck, I grabbed my pack and went for another hunt around 5 pm.
After an entire year of not visiting that site, it looked the same as I had left it. Even the rocks I couldn’t carry out last time were stacked as I had left them a year ago! No sign of good crinoids, but lots of trilo molts! And then, I found it!
Another Anataphrus borraeus trilobite! A big’un!
I thought it was a Bumastus trilobite, but Piranha (trilo expert on thefossilforum.com) informed me that I was wrong – it was a mate to Waldo!
My heart started pounding after Piranha stated that! WOW, I actually found Waldo’s mate! Well, I don’t know that trilobites actually “mated” but let’s use “mate” like the Brits do as a friend. 😀
S/he is in a diving position and Piranha said it is probably whole! However, my prepping skills are lacking to do this one.
So, GREAT 4TH OF JULY HUNT in the Galena Formation!
I hope your hunts were as fruitful!
