Ah yes, that quarry IS posted, I just wasn’t looking in the right places… Oh well. However, the right-of-way directly in front of it is the best shale I have discovered yet! Very fossiliferous! Wow, this doesn’t look like much, does it?
BUT have I found the Motherload of crinoid rocks! There is shale under that grass! I believe it is
Maquoketa or Dubuque Shale and it is loaded with crinoids, white little sparkles of crinoid rings from 70% of the rocks I found! Oh, yes, and I found a nice ceph with some its original shell left! Lots of brachs and bivalves, and I’m thinking this would be rich for trilos also.
The shale goes for several hundred feet along the back side of the ditch and then there is an upper layer that is even better!
Oh, and don’t miss the drainage ditch that runs into the quarry. I found two very nice water worn horn corals, brachs and crinoid rocks in there.
