Highway 52 just below Fountain, like a quarter mile, is VERY PROLIFIC! If I were going to recommend a multi-faceted hunt for a beginner, this would be it!
I believe this is a native Galena road cut, but I also *believe that significant “riprap” from Fillmore County has been placed here.
*PERSONAL OPINION ONLY
Anyway, there are road cuts on both sides that go perhaps a mile off and on. The southbound lane has perhaps a mile of drywash (not so dry after rain) maybe more. There is ample parking–important!
Last year I found a large cephalopod in a huge rock–too big to harvest. Plus hermatoma gastros, horn corals, crinoids segments (Indian Beads), ceph pieces, bryozoa, and recepts. Lots of hash plates!
This year I stopped on the way back from Harmony (detour from Hwy. 16) and got TWO trilos!!!
This is a fun and easy hunt–walk down the ditch and watch for fossils. š
With all the rain we’ve had, yes your feet will get wet, but wimps don’t fossil hunt!
