Andreya Sauers found a rare fossil, according to Caleb Scheer, paleontologist from La Crosse, WI, “Halysites/Chain Core are quite rare from the Ordovician in this area, so that is a fantastic find!”

The five-year-old was on her first fossil hunt with her mother, Kristina Sauers-Benter and cousin, Julia McLeod, when she found it on a roadside hunt just south of Wykoff in Fillmore County.

“We were just having fun!” said her mother Kristina. “We never expected this!”

They didn’t know what they had found, so a friend posted it on thefossilforum.com for identification. “I’m thrilled,” said her mother Kristina. “What fun!”
