The Geology of Bluff Country by Gary Erickson is a short book that is a “Must Read” for anyone coming here to fossil hunt and/or interested in the unique geology of this “driftless” area.
Gary Erickson was an Earth Sciences teacher in Fillmore County for many years and he hosts the Fillmorenature.blogspot.com on our sidebar which has over 1,000 pictures of Bluff Country for you to admire.
This book is a quick read of under 40 pages and has a nice section on the most common fossils in Fillmore County, with caves, karst topography, sinkholes and glaciation all covered – nice photographs. Even if you are not a geology person this will answer your questions about why this area is so different from the rest of Minnesota the reason we have caves and sinkholes here, and if you are a fossil hunter it answers why the best places to hunt are in certain formations.
Whether you are out for a Sunday drive or attempting to enhance your children’s knowledge of geology THE REASON to buy this book – in my humble opinion – is the geology driving tour that Gary has mapped out at the end. Wow, I even learned a few things that I didn’t know! It is a loop that starts in Spring Valley and comes back here and takes you through all of the best fossil hunting areas in Fillmore County! It doesn’t get much better than this!
