We were at the Fillmore County Fair yesterday and I just had to stop and check out this little rocky beach. You can see the Hwy. 52 bridge in the background, so this is basically at the intersection of Hwy. 52 and 12, or the south entry into the city of Preston, whichever suits you. Yes, it is a favorite trout fishing hole for the locals and right off the Root River Bike Trail, but I found fossils! And if they are leaving fossils laying on this beach, I want to get to that rocky island just beyond it! I don’t think the water is more than 18″ deep, but I had on good shoes and no time.
So this is what I found in a 5 minute walk of that little beach. I would look at this as a “check it out” after a good rain beach.
There is a lot of road construction going on with Hwy. 16, so we took Cty. 12 then 14 back to Hwy. 63 and then home to Spring Valley. We were going right past where Bob found the Isotelus Trilobite (We’ve nicknamed him “Stucky” because he is stuck in the rock.), so we decided to visit Stucky. 😀
Someone has been working it, that was nice to see. And Stucky is still there. But this time Bob started looking at rocks too! He just has an eye for trilobites! First rock he picked up had trilobite parts in it! We continued fossiling back to the car and I found a cephalopod imprint and some crinoids and brachs, and he found another rock with trilobite parts in it. Actually, the cut seems more prolific with fossils since somebody has been working it than before!
